The name Ayurveda is derived from two Sanskrit words ‘ayur’ meaning life and ‘veda’ meaning knowledge. Ayurveda is the oldest serving complete medical system in the world. The art of Ayurveda spread in the 6th century B.C. to Tibet, China, Mongolia, Korea and Sri Lanka carried over by Buddhist monks traveling to those lands. Ayurveda thus offers a unique blend of science and philosophy that balances the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual components necessary for holistic health.

After the country became independent in 1947, the first health ministers’ conference resolved that Ayurveda should be developed and put to use for the benefit of the people. In due course, this system got official recognition and became part of the national health network of the country. In the present situation, medical scientists are researching Ayurveda remedies for lifestyle related diseases, degenerative and psychosomatic disorders.

Pune is known as the cultural and educational capital of Maharashtra. The famous Bharatiya Sanskriti Darshan Trust is located at Wagholi, about 20 km east from Pune. This trust was founded in 1954 by Late Param Poojya Prabhakar Keshav Sardeshmukh Maharaj; with the consent of Sadguru Mali Maharaj. The trust has many wings viz. Ayurvedic wing, Musical wing, Yoga Wing and has been conducting an Ayurved Hospital and Research Center since 1984. There are also various herbal medicinal plantations at the place.
