Institute of Advanced Legal Studies
The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) was founded in 1991 under the Indian Law Society. The Institute was opened on 4th March 1991 at the hands of Late Shri.G.G.Karnik, the then Vice-President of the Indian Law Society. The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) was established with a view to improving research in law and promoting legal awareness among lay people with a vision to strengthening a legal culture supportive of the rule of law.
The Institute operates research in Law, run courses of socio-legal interests with a view to spread legal education among people engaged in diverse pursuits. Diploma courses in Consumer protection Laws and in Housing laws were started in the years 1992 and 1995 respectively. These diploma courses are made for the lawyers, laymen and professionals. These courses have received good response from students of law and professionals like architects, lawyers, builders and promoters, bank officers etc. The Institute also organizes workshops, seminars, lectures and discussions. Recently, the institute published a series of booklets on legal issues useful for lawyers as well as lay-persons.
Diploma in Housing Laws: The course is designed to educate laymen, students of law and also professionals. The course has received overwhelming response since its induction. The takers for this course are law students, practicing advocates, architects, civil engineers, promoters and builders engaged in housing construction, and consumer activists. Certificate Course in Trial Court Advocacy: IALS proposes to conduct training for the benefit of junior lawyers, who are on the threshold of the profession. This training particularly aims to develop further skills in areas that may not be adequately dealt with, while they were students of law. IALS undertakes to provide additional training outside the traditional classroom experience, which would include units, taught face-to-face practical skills training. Such training will help to groom better lawyers and better judges
The Department of Law
The Department of Law was founded in 1965. It has been ranked by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as one of the top five Law Departments in the country because of its academic excellence, research outputs and remarkable contribution to the development of legal education in India.
In 1975 the department moved over to full-time LL.M. Semester system. It, with a view to coping up with promising trends in legal education at National and International levels and to providing to social needs at home, revised its courses in 1984, 1990 and 1997.
LL.M.: LL.M. is a full time course comprising of four semesters (Two academic years). Academic session generally commences in the month of July every year. Indian applicants are required to apply to the Department in a prescribed form. And overseas applicants are advised to approach the Department through International Students Centre of the University.
ELIGIBILITY: LL.B. degree (after completing three years of the old LL.B. course or the New Five Year Course) of the University or its equivalent degree of another statutory University, recognized as equivalent to said degree of the University of Pune. SELECTION: Admissions will be on merit basis. Reservations for different categories will be as per the prevailing rules of the University.
FEES: Tuition and other fees will be as per the prevailing rules of the University. SCHOLARSHIPS and FREESHIPS: Different types of scholarships or freeships are provided for the course. Interested students are advised to keep the track of scholarships notified in the Department from time to time.
FACILITIES: Our library, which is built over last four decades, is well-equipped with acclaimed national and international journals in addition to a huge collection of legal treatises and references, published in India and abroad. Internet connectivity and computer facilities are available to the students.
Ph.D.: Admissions of Research Scholars for Ph.D. degree of the University are governed by the prevailing Ph.D. Rules. A copy of rules is available in publication unit of the University. Several of these papers form part of prestigious collections published in the form of books. The number of books published by the faculty during the same period is 20.
