The College of Engineering, Pune (COEP) was established in 1854. The college was initially started as “Poona Engineering Class and Mechanical School”, then the name was changed to “Poona Civil Engineering College” and finally in 1911 the name was converted to College of Engineering, Pune.
The College of Engineering is recognized by AICTE, UGC and University of Pune.
The college was given full academic autonomy in 2003. All the academic programs, the academic calendar, examinations, results are managed by the Senate of the college.
The college campus is located on the Mumbai Pune National Highway, on the banks of the Mula River; the college is conveniently located, in the heart of Pune city. The college spreads over an area of around 40 acres.
COEP was ranked 14th amongst engineering colleges in India by India Today magazine, and frequently figures in the list of Top 15 engineering colleges in India according to various surveys.

Undergraduate admissions are currently based on scores in the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET) conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education. Post Graduate Admissions Postgraduate admissions are held on the basis of score obtained in the General Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examination. The (GATE) is an All-India Examination conducted by the Seven IITs and IISC, Bangalore, on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India. Eligibility Criteria Candidate should be an Indian National having passed the HSC (Std. XII) examination of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English,

Library is one of the important resources for the students. The library has a collection of 95,000 plus books, 30,000 titles. The students can also access foreign journals online. Hostel The College provides Hostel for both Boys & Girls with mess facility. The hostel has ten buildings; two buildings are reserved for girls and the rest all the blocks are reserved for boys. The hostel has 9 Assistant Rectors & 1 Chief Rectors & Deputy Chief Rector. There is inhouse boarding facility for the students staying in hostel. Computational and networking facilities are provided in every room along with a central computing lab with 75 terminals.
