The Institute has certainly come a long way from its modest starting. The Government of Indiaacquired the terrain where the famous Prabhat film company made films for example ‘Kunku’, ‘ Manoos’ ,’ Shejari’ etc. While it was provided for deal and founded the Film Institute in the year 1960.
Presently, the studios from the Prabhat time still maintain to be in use via the students for their different exercises. These studios have been announced legacy sites through the Pune Municipal Corporation.
In 1974, the scope of the Institute was increased to comprise the then quickly rising era of television.
The Television faction, former placed at the Mandi House, New Delhi, transferred to the Institute campus at Pune in the early seventies thus as to getting together preparing in film and television in a common roof, thus justifying the name of the Institute – the Film and Television Institute of India. This faction of the institute has been mainly subjected with conducting in use training to personnel from Doordarshan.
The alumni of the FTII have entered all corners of the Indian Film and Television industry and have polished in all its sections. For example Subhash Ghai, Jaya Bhaduri, Shatrughan Sinha, Mani Kaul, Nasiruddin Shah, Raza Murad, Mithun Chakraborty, Tom Alter, Kanwarjit Paintal, Adoor Gopal Krishnan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Raj Kumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra are alumni of this Institute.
The FTII is an independent body beneath the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India. Its policies are determined by a Governing Council. The present director of the institute is Mr. Pankaj Rag, IAS. The Film and Television is a body of CILECT an international association of film schools.

The illustrious Rajbaug farms extend on a huge area of 125 acres on the beautiful banks of the Mula - Mutha River at Loni-Kalbhor, Pune, owned to the legendary showman of Indian Cinema - Late Raj Kapoor.
Rajbaug was officially handed over to Hon'ble Dr. Vishwanath D. Karad, Executive President and Director General, MAEER on 4th August 2002, via the Kapoor Family. This place was a comfortable place for the late showman who found high relief over here and had desired that the land be used for social or educational need only. To meet his dream, this place will be converted into a huge educational campus though still maintaining its original silence.
This picturesque area shows peace and tranquility and seems closer to mother earth in spite of being placed in nearby of the busy Pune-Solapur Highway. It can be the only place for the 'Sadhana', the desiring of awareness. Presently it is an autonomous program
