National Chemical Laboratory

National Chemical Laboratory was established in 1950 with an objective to carry out advanced research work in chemicals and allied disciplines. The main areas of research include polymer science, organic chemistry, catalysis, materials chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemical sciences and process development.

NCL has the distinction of producing largest number of Ph.Ds in Chemical Sciences in India. It publishes second largest number of papers in chemical sciences (430), files the largest number of patents, both in India (60) and abroad (60).

NCL has world class infrastructure facilities for research. About 400 students pursue their research work in NCL for doctoral degrees and about 50 students are warded PhD degree every year.

Research and Training

National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) is a pioneer centre for research in chemicals and allied disciplines in India. NCL does not formally award degrees. However, besides Ph.D. students, several MSc and B.Tech / B.E.students work on their final year projects at NCL. NCL scientists often teach at local colleges and universities. They are recognized as PhD supervisors by local universities viz. Pune University, Mumbai University and IIT, Bombay.

NCL also conducts specialized continuing education programs for the industry.  NCL has been conducting training programs for various industries for polyolefin manufacturing technologies, polyolefin rheology, processing of polyolefins etc.

Facilities/Resources

NCL has world-class infrastructure to support the science & technology activities in India. The facilities include pilot plants, sophisticated instruments, information infrastructure, workshop & glass blowing. Services are also made available for deserving clients.
