National Centre for Radio Astrophysics


The National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is a premier centre for research in a wide range of areas in astronomy and astrophysics. NCRA also offers exciting opportunities to work in technical aspects relevant for radio astronomy such as analog and digital electronics, signal processing, antenna design, communication and software development.

NCRA has built and operates the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) which is located nearly 80 km north of Pune, in Maharastra, India and is the most powerful radio telescope operating at low radio frequencies. It is a national facility and is being used by astronomers throughout the world, leading to many significant discoveries. GMRT consists of 30 fully steer able dishes each having a diameter of 45 meters; extend above a 25 km area. NCRA has made and conducts the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) which is a huge cylindrical telescope placed near Udhagamandalam, India.
National Center for Radio Astrophysics (NCAR) Pune an integral part of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) was established in 1989 to contribute effectively in the field of astronomical sciences and astrophysics. The National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (IUCAA), the academic wing of NCAR Pune conducts several academic programs.
